And business in the shop was already booming within days of the project’s opening last month. Ian Kerr, a member of the 13-strong consortium behind the project, said: “Sales in the shop have exceeded my expectations. In the first 10 days they were double what I expected.

“We’re selling five-star products at three-star prices in five-star surroundings and we’re delighted with the way the shop looks and at the manner in which the work was done. “The two shop-fitters from Millerbrown were very professional and very efficient — so much so that they even brought their own vacuum cleaner and dustpan and brush to make sure the floor was spotless once they’d finished!”

Millerbrown’s role did not stop there, however. The company sent over a team to merchandise the shop as part of the fitting-out contract and Kerr added: “That really helped us get away to a flying start. The assistance we were given in merchandising the shop was invaluable.” Commenting on that aspect of the contract, Paul Sanders, Millerbrown design consultant, said: “As far as I am aware this is not a service any other shopfitting company offers.

“As for the completed clubhouse and our role in it - I am delighted with how well the shop has dovetailed with the beautiful finishes the owners have specified and the craftsmanship employed. This is one very special shop in a unique clubhouse.”

Visit www.millerbrown.co.uk or call 0870 2032003.

Professional shopfitting needn't cost the earth

Cost is uppermost in everyone's mind, particularly now, but did you know that we've fitted out many shops, and to a much higher standard than slatwall, for as little as 10 or 12 thousand pounds?

The team at millerbrown have more than 50 years experience designing and fitting out golf shops - a claim that no other UK-based company can make. With this experience comes a real understanding of how to get the best financial return from each and every shop, because a refit should always be a self-funding exercise - even during the current tough trading conditions.

We will show you how we can make your shop more profitable and, with a history of hundreds of completed golf shops behind our design and logistics team, you may also be pleasantly surprised at how much can be achieved for how little. In fact, the average millerbrown total refit cost last year was just £16,000, with all projects being completed to the same standards as those shown in the accompanying pictures.

Give us a call. Katina Davies, who runs the shop with her husband club Professional Jason Davies, said "I am really pleased with what we have achieved for the money we've spent. Like everyone, we are being very cautious about investments and unnecessary costs, however, with the clubhouse being completely rebuilt we knew we had to make the most of the opportunity. We had high ambitions for the shop and have worked really hard at getting value for money whilst still achieving a modern look with good quality fittings. We chose millerbrown because of their reputation and their understanding of the retail environment. Everything is very well made and completely flexible - and it cost us a lot less than we were quoted by other companies.

Even better, we have only been open a few weeks and we are well ahead of our forecasts. Images that rest easy on the eye are more appealing to browse whereas cluttered images, whether a random mix of colours or just an untidy display, tend to induce subliminal stress that we all try to shut out.

By grouping plain colours together into logical stories, such as all pastels in one section and all dark colours in another, it is easier for customers to gravitate towards their particular favourites as there is no effort required to browse through their preferences.

Within each story the colours should then be graded from lighter to darker with all similar colours such as blues or yellows being kept together.

For co-ordinated patterned ranges these should be displayed together in their own story and, if they naturally team up with plain garments such as skirts or shorts from other ranges, it often works well to show a complete story that may embrace 2 or 3 different brands but as 'one look'.
Because the stock-turn of textiles in most pro shops is less than for High Street retailers, the product range can often look very 'samey' to regulars as there is never enough stock movement in any particular week to alter their view of the shop. A good way to overcome this is to change all the front garments on each hanger once a week. Making a discipline of doing this on the same day, like every Monday morning, is a great way of ensuring that it doesn't get overlooked. Customers will think it's new stock and look at the shop with a fresh eye each time they come in.

Folding for effect…

When folding garments, interleave tissue paper to bulk out the front edge. This not only makes all garments look better but also more tactile - they 'squish' nicely as the customer picks them up. It is also particularly effective for club-crested garments as it usually makes the complete crest visible as the picture shows.
